Novella of the Bride…

Wedding Buzzwords ~ Vintage, Homey, Joyous, Festive, & DIY
Specialty Cocktail ~ The Jazz Mattaz: Peruvian Pisco, Ginger Ale, & a splash of lemon

I, Jazmin,  was born in Lima, Peru and moved to the United States in 1996 when I was 9.  I grew up in Toms River, New Jersey and moved to NYC for college at St. John’s.  I was a Teach For America corps member and stayed on passed my two year commitment to continue teaching at the school I was placed in- PS 90 in Coney Island.  I am a Special Education teacher.  Matt works as Director, Business Development at Transperfect Legal Solutions.  Matt was born in Nanuet, NY and grew up in Highland Mills, NY.  After going to two different colleges, he finally transferred to St. John’s and met me during transfer student orientation in August 2007.  Although we were not friends during the first year, Matt attempted to become close during work study.  His job was to set up the projectors and computers for the Graduate School and my job was to make sure classes were running smoothly.  He would purposely set up the projectors wrong and soon, my boss was sending me with him during every set up.  This was how he got me to be his friend and we remained close.  We didn’t date until after college but the transition was easy since we had been best friends for such a long time.

We wanted to place an importance on family.  Besides my parents and siblings, the rest of my family is in Peru.  Although they could not come, I wanted everyone to feel like they were family, and feel like they were at home.  My family friends are very different from Matt’s family and friends but everyone danced and laughed together and that was essentially what we hoped it would be like.  Our venue was a home and we placed pictures of ourselves and our families on the mantles as if it was our own.  Our guests were able to enjoy the gardens and the different rooms as they mingled through cocktail hour.  Since the dance room was separate from the dining room, dinner felt like it was at home and it wasn’t interrupted with people dancing around you or dance music blasting.  Matt’s grandfather led us in a blessing before beginning dinner and it was a wonderful way to start off the speeches and reception.  Instaed of just using table numbers, we made sure that our table numbers reflected important numbers in our relationship.  For example, we had the mileage between Lima and NY, the date we met, our first apartment, etc.

From the beginning, we did not want our wedding to take place in a ballroom and feel like it was just another party.  The Round Hill House was accomodating from the moment we met and provided everything we wanted.  It was a gorgeous home with various rooms that were beautiful but welcoming at the same time.  The gardens were private and well taken care of.  As soon as we stood under our ceremony tree, we felt surrounded by flowers and greenery as if you were in a park.  More importantly, it was big enough to hold all of our guests but small enough to feel private.  Our favorite display in the house was between the bar and the dining room.  We put as many wedding pictures as we could find from our families and throughout the night we saw many people walking by and admirning the different wedding dresses, ceremonies and family members in the photographs.  The separate dance room was decorated with up lighting and definitely provdied for a good dance after a lovely, candle lit dinner.  The venue also gave us the idea to have a Peruvian cocktail and an Italian pizza station so both our cultures were represented during cocktail hour.  As we exited, the sparklers down the front stairs looked amazing and made for a great exit!

A Little Help From Their Friends ~ Matt’s aunt and his cousins baked the wedding favors.  They made sangria cupcakes and put them in mason jars with purple ribbons to match our theme. Our guests raved about how delicious the favors were and people were even taking extra ones from other tables!  Sean, Matt’s brother made our save the date, invitation, drink sign, instagram sign, and wedding program.  My mom made my veil and belt.  We went to the fashion district in NYC and picked out the fabric, handpicked the jewels and she dedicated 2 months sewing lace and crystals.  At one point my veil was sprawled accross the living room as she was stitching each crystal! It was beautiful to have my mom create that for me, it was something that we got to do together and  felt so personalized. She also stitched our wedding date in Spanish under my wedding dress as my something blue.  I was proud to wear it all and was happy to see my mom’s light up as she was putting it on me.  My lovely bridesmaids and close friends dedicate time to help me put together arts and crafts as well. We used different templates with wedding sayings and initials, cut them out and glued them onto stirrers and straws.  They also helped me make personalized bookmarks for all of the guests! We had 155 guests and each person had a bookmark with their table designation on the back.  We tried to make them as personal as possible with colors they would love and with their intial on the front.  This project took the longest but it was wonderful to see the end result and to see people using them as bookmarks in their books.  My father in law spray painted the wooden heart and letters to put on the tree for our ceremony.

Couple’s Favorite Moment: “Our favorite moment was our ceremony.  Not only was a family friend marrying us, but we had readings from people very important to us.  Matt’s grandmother and my younger brother Andre read. It was special having a wedding ceremony written for us by our officiant.  It was personal and unique.  Although we were too afraid to say our own vows, the vows we shared were as special and meaningful because they were different.  Adding the readings from our family further solidified the feeling of togetherness and family that we cared so much about.”
