I have been going back and forth for a bit now about whether or not I wanted to do a post with my own engagement photos. I have a few reasons for my wavering with the primary reason being, as I mentioned in an earlier post, it actually wasn’t me that wanted engagement photos. I know, sort of surprising right? Fact of the matter was, it was Mid-November, ramping up into my busiest time of the year work wise, & I didn’t have the proper time to myself to really think about what I wanted to do engagement photo wise, as well as being unsure exactly what was the ‘voice’ for our paper items was going to be. Truly really pushed for a photo to go along with our Save The Dates & so without knowing what I really wanted to get out of them, we decided to give it a go all the same.
The wonderful Kate Murphy of Kate Murphy Photography, pinch hit for a VERY preggers Sarah DiCicco, & was happy to oblige us with a last minute engagement session. Truly thought that as our wedding was ultimately going to be in Vermont, that he really wanted our engagement pics to be very iconic New York City where he is born and raised and I have been since 2001. We came out with a few classic locations, got a car service & committed to an early call time on a VERY chilly day! The last piece of the puzzle was our look. This part actually wasn’t that hard for me to tackle. Truly has a wonderful Hugo Boss suit that I love, & I had a pair of Chloe heels that I adore. The rest was filling in the blanks! Yes I often dress from the shoes up!
Believe it or not, walking shots can be quite difficult, as most couples tend to over think it and suddenly forget how to walk. Just remember, you’ve been walking for years, so just let it flow!
I added the above image on the left to this collection as I wanted to point out something for couples during their shoots. If you notice my left wrist isn’t very pleasant looking. Without realizing it at the time, I ‘popped’ my wrist out & thus rendered a great pic, odd looking. Being natural is key, but you also need to stay a tad conscious of what your body is doing throughout the process.
I will be very honest, I am OK with our engagement pics, but not over the moon in love with them. Not at all because of Kate Murphy, who I again stress is a total doll & a great steal in the wedding photography world! The reason I am eh about them is simply that I wasn’t really able to invest my normal gusto into them & feel they are simply nicely styled photographs of Truly and I, which I guess is all you need right? Also, (I know, I know a total girl comment here but….) I was literally at my heaviest I had been in years & simply didn’t feel comfortable at the time, and still cringe when I see them. But that is my own personal issue and I am simply being up front with you guys.
One other small note for everyone, Truly & I actually had a HUGE fight the day before and on that morning we were still in that ‘you stay to your side of the room’ mode, before we headed off to the shoot. I mention this for 2 reasons. First is if you guys have a fight, don’t worry about it. It was actually some what being forced to ‘like’ each other again {photographically speaking}, that got us right back on track. We love each other and a stupid fight isn’t going to ruin things. Second, pretty much as I just said, the shoot got us right back on track! Maybe we all should do a photo shoot when we fight!
