An escape to Thailand brought along a sweet memory for Jessica and Marcus: a proposal and truly a surprise one at that because Jessica didn’t think Marcus was daring enough to do so. She knew of his consternation to bring a ring that far simply because he might lose it (a great reason, we think) but he astonished everyone in the end when he popped the question at sunrise in the Phi Phi Islands. They carried on their outdoor motif at their wedding for something more formal and green versus a sandy backdrop. Jessica and Marcus wanted to really evoke springtime and with the help of planner Piper and Muse Events, they crafted a delightful, colorful, classic downtown Houston wedding with personalized twists.

The pair wanted to have a romantic garden affair with an array of fantastic colors, and there’s no better place to infuse color than in your floral design. Shay & Olive photographed Johanna Terry Event’s bright formations, with coral pink peonies, stand-out orange ranunculus, and soft pink spray roses and lisianthus, to name a few. To add, cultural homages were a must, and at their ceremony, Jessica and Marcus’s parents read excerpts about love in Chinese and Korean, along with conducting a Chinese tea ceremony at their rehearsal dinner. J + M wanted nothing more but to put their stamp on their wedding, and we think they certainly achieved it.

How did you meet?

We met in medical school, we were classmates.

What is your proposal story?

We got engaged in Phi Phi Islands, Thailand! We had just matched into our residency programs and we on a South East Asia vacation. Jessica didn’t think Marcus would propose over-seas bc fear of losing a ring. We went to watch the sunrise one morning and take photos and Marcus asked Jessica to turn around, and there he was kneeling!

What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?

Most important thing was for our wedding to feel like a representation of us and our relationship! We wanted some wedding traditions but made sure to tweak things to make it more us! We also wanted to basically throw a “big celebration” make sure everyone had a great time. Lastly we knew we wanted a live band, and that was a must!

What were your favorite parts of the day?

Our wedding vows, we wrote our own and made our day even more personalized. Our first dance (we practiced a lot for it and it turned out great!).
