When Sarah and Kevin went through the motions of their simple and sweet at-home proposal, there was something about that said simplicity that they wanted to carry forth through to their wedding day. Planner Alli from Alli Mae Events wanted to bring forth the couple’s yearning for a classic and traditional wedding with a more contemporary nod. After selecting the Winnipeg Art Gallery as their wedding spot, their puzzle pieces started to align to form their minimalist wedding dreams with Kamp Photography heading up the photos.

The high ceilings and bare limestone flooring at the art gallery gave way to the modernity and including the neutral and earthy white palette pared that modernity down a tad bit. Sarah and Kevin opted for a fascinating mix of fresh and dried flowers (along with dried moss and grass), which naturally added a texturized look to their ceremony installation and reception tablescapes. (Sarah mused that they focused on texture more as opposed to honing in on color.) The proverbial icing on the cake in this wedding is that glorious mural at the reception. We love the bright punch of color and it gives the right amount of flair to this classically-colored wedding.

How did you meet?

We first met when we were about 3 years old! We lived in the same neighbourhood and our babysitters would get us together for playdates. We lost touch as we got older and didn’t see each for almost 20 years, then reconnected when we started working together as lawyers at the same firm.

What is your proposal story?

No crazy proposal story here, but incredibly “us” – Kevin proposed at our new house on a Sunday afternoon – literally as we were doing laundry and watching Netflix!

What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?

Definitely the most important thing to us was that our guests have a good time, so our splurge was on a fantastic DJ who we knew would get people dancing. We aren’t big on some of the more traditional wedding elements, so we decided to skip a wedding cake – we decided the expense wasn’t worth getting a couple of photos of us cutting it. Instead, we had a dessert table with amazing dainties from my favourite bakery Lilac Bakery.

What were your favorite parts of the day?

Seeing Kevin for the first time that day was of course a highlight! We did our first look before the ceremony in the front yard at his parents’ house and it was such a special moment. Also, getting ready with my bridesmaids and mom at my house that morning was so much fun – having all of the most special women to me in one room together was the best way to start the day.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

Honestly – the absolute best decision that we made was to hire Alli, our wedding planner! We (of course) have never planned a wedding before and had no idea where to start. Alli made everything both perfect and so easy for us. We could never have made the day happen without her!
